Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic injectable treatments in the United States. Since 2002, when the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic purposes, millions of people have reduced the appearance of their wrinkles and boosted their self-confidence with Botox.

Botox reduces the appearance of wrinkles on your forehead, the “11” lines — those two vertical lines between your brows, and the crow’s feet or smile lines around your eyes. The injections only take 10-15 minutes, depending on how many injections you need.

How does Botox work?

Botox is derived from Clostridium botulinum and is a neuromodulator. When a team member at Carmichael Medical Clinic injects Botox into your skin, the serum temporarily paralyzes the tiny muscles under your facial skin. As those facial muscles stop moving, the skin that covers them also relaxes, and your wrinkles fade.

Am I a good candidate for Botox injections?

If you’re unhappy about the appearance of your skin and are in good health overall, you are probably a good candidate for Botox. The team at Carmichael Medical Clinic provides thorough consultations before giving Botox injections.

Depending on the condition of your skin, your provider might recommend dermal fillers instead. Dermal fillers can replace volume loss in your skin. The team at Carmichael Medical Clinic can inject dermal fillers into your cheeks, lips, or nasolabial folds to help rejuvenate your appearance.

Dermal filler injections take slightly longer than a Botox treatment, as your provider takes care to only inject as much filler as you need to enhance your appearance.

What happens during a Botox treatment?

When you have Botox or another injectable treatment like dermal fillers, your provider begins by examining your skin and identifying the best places for your injections. Then, they clean your skin and prepare the syringe.

If you have sensitive skin or are nervous about needles, they can apply a topical anesthetic to help you stay comfortable during your treatment. When your skin is ready, your provider injects the serum into your skin.

The effects of dermal fillers are immediately noticeable, and you should see the results of Botox within 24 to 48 hours.*
